Default I need help!

Before when in 2wd I would hit a bump and it would start to engage into 4wd but it wasnt fully engaging into 4wd and it would just make this sound of metal not meshing. So I would pull back shifter into 4wd to fully engage it. Guy at transmission shop says it sounded like a bad shifter so I got an old one and had them install it. Well now it doesnt do it when I hit a bump but before I get onto the highway and as I get off the highway. A friend says he believes it may be an issue with the transfer case. Any suggestions on what might be the problem or how to fix it.

I'd pull the drain plug on the transfer case check for any metal shavings.

Okay, Gotcha.

What you're hearing is the chain ratcheting (slipping) due to being stretched/worn over time and miles.

Very common with this transfer case because the chain is loaded, working and pulling hard all the time.

To verify this, put the truck in 4x4 and crank the steering hard as in a very sharp turn. Give it the coals and listen for the noise.

I could understand that about the noise part however I can see while driving when the noise starts the front drive shaft start to turn and thats how I know that is trying to engage into 4wd from 2wd.

On a 203 transfer case, the front driveshaft turns any time the truck moves.........unless, of course, someone has been in there and welded the spiders solid or put a lock out kit in it.

Are you sure it's a 203? Big heavy, lop-sided cast iron thing? Or, is it a 241 (aluminum case)?

def np203, I was able to read the plate on it. When I have it in 2wd it doesnt turn until it does that stupid thing where it tries to engage. Uggghhhhh do you want to buy a truck?
