There is definitely something up with your meter because there is no way you have that many volts coming off of it.

Well, if it's a 24 volt battery it is low

If 12 volt I agree with everyone...bad meter. If not, get the hell away from it.

It could be overcharging. I assume when you "turn it on" you are starting it. Are you using an analog or digital vom?

It's an old digital meter but i have to say that it's been acting up haha... I'll use a different meter and see. The reason i was testing the batter was because my battery gauge fluctuates.. I opened the instrument cluster but got to a point i didn't know what to do.. there was a wire running from steering column the cluster.. i believe it was for gear indicator or whatever it's called ..

anyway.. i was going to test battery and alternator and then move on to battery gauge motor in instrument cluster.

Almost any major auto parts store can do a charging system check in a few minutes.

I'm going a little off topic here but just in case you are over charging... If you pull the alternator remember to unhook the battery because today my roommate had me rushing to pull his off the sierra and i went to pull the rubber boot over the terminal end off the back of the alternator and dropped the wire and it hit the high rise aluminum valve cover and arced and I jumped off the truck and BOOM something exploded and smoke went every where. nothing was on fire... I thought the redtop blew up but it was smoking from the valve cover... it ripped the valve cover studs out of the head and blow the gasket out.... My best guess is the crankcase had fuel vapor and when I arced it they ignited.... I think somebody's got to much blow by...

It turned out it was the multimeter. I fixed it and tested battery and alternator with it again and everything was fine. I wanna know if the fluctuating battery gauge is because of not enough grounds?
