Loose Steering, Possible Bad Gear Box, 97 Silverado
I did a search to see if other threads had the data, didn't see much data so I'm starting a new thread.
My 97 Silverado 5.7liter ext cab has too much play in the steering. Can the gearbox be adjusted or is it something that just needs to be replaced? If replaced, what is the difficulty level in doing so? I'm pretty quick to learn, not afraid to give things a try as long as I do my homework prior to taking anything apart.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If there is a allen wrench fitting on the top of the steering box it is adjustable.
Have someone turn your wheel and make sure there is no play on your pitman, center link, etc.
If the play is inside the box it can be adjusted, I just had mine adjusted on my 89 Caprice at the shop, took 5 minutes and the car drive completely different.
Check the internet before proceeding
Not 100% sure how they did but near as I could tell;
key off
wheels straight with steering wheel straight,
loosen outer nut on top of steering box
tighten allen fitting ALL the way down
then, back off 1/2 turn
tighten outer nut
start car and make sure the steering is turning freely from stop to stop
test drive
Now this is the way I think they did it but there is some debate on the internet as to how it should be done but it sure fixed my problem, the car was a handfull to keep in the lane on the freeway and now she tracks beautifully.
