ive got a 00 z71 extended cab with a 4.8 vortec.... Just recently had the transfer case lock down in it so i dropped the transfer and trans and im going to completely overhaul the truck... it has 270,00 on the body now...as far as the trans issues iv got them under control.. im going to pull the motor and freshen up it as well rings, seals, heads freshened up and was wondering what i could do to the engine to make it pull stronger without having to change injectors and sacrifice too much gas mileage... also iv heard these engines where terrible about cam bearing issues is that true??? any help would be greatly appreciated

You could do a small cam but I wouldn't do much more than that. Even if you are freshening it up. Head work and the like will result in worse mpg just for the simple fact that you'll be hittin it wherever you go. My suggestion is to do a 212/218 112lsa cam (custom grind) and get some Longtube headers and a custom tune. Call it done from there. Will be a whole new truck
