Default Possible new truck

So I'm thinking about making an offer on this truck (I'll post the ad at the bottom) and was just looking for some opinions on what others thought might be a good starting offer. Another concern of mine is that the truck is 4 years old now and with 60k miles on it....I can get a 2012 model with a few less options for about 10k more. Would this be the better way to go? I really don't want that new truck truck payment though. Thanks for all comments and opinions.

I just bought a new 2012 (3500HD), and found that GM had a lot of rebates. Actually way more than I first thought. It made it worthwhile to buy new instead of a recent used truck IMO.

Yeah, I'm not sure what im gonna do. I went and test drove the 08 but it had bright white interior and I have a dog and get quite dirty at work so there is no way that was happening. I'll keep my eye out for more options I'm in no hurry.

in my opinion try to find one (if your going for a desiel) before they added that extra additive those trucks are better and the epa didnt get to those sometimes thos are better than getting a new truck also new trucks you have to break them in for the first 15-20k miles on gas and could be as long as 50k on a desiel and if you dont break them in right then they wont run right

If you seek a Duramax diesel, get one that is a pre-2008 model -- so that it will not have that stupid DPF system on it.

If you want a HD truck with a gas engine, you'll save a few ducats on the purchase price; but you'll use more fuel and the resale value will be slightly lower.

P.S. Do you really need an HD? Some of the 1500 models are pretty rugged trucks.

In California and Nevada when I was looking in November for a used truck with the diesel engine and 4WD all the trucks were priced very high. The GM/Chevy trucks were at least $5K more than a Ford with the same equipment, trim level, and mileage.

With the used prices for a used Chevy 2500HD 4WD diesel truck with under 60K miles showing in the mid-30K range I decided it made more sense to buy a new truck and get the full 100K mile and 5-year warranty and the better frame, suspension, and diesel (with the exhaust brake), bigger brakes, etc. of the 2011-2012 trucks.

I bought a full loaded 2011 2500HD with 4WD and all the options packages in LT trim and the diesel (and the bed liner, 6" oval side steps, truck box) for less than $42K. I paid $6K more to get a new 2011 truck over a 2008-09 used truck with 50-60K miles on the odometer.

As for needing 50K miles to break in a new engine that is hogwash. The "break-in" period is 500 miles during which you are not supposed to tow a trailer at all and for the next 500 miles if towing a trailer to keep the speed below 50mph. This needs to be taken within the context of the likely use of these trucks to tow a trailer weighing over 10,000 lbs. and often over 15,000 pounds. The only other "break-in" aspect is the recommendation to replace the external filter on the Allison transmission after the first 7500 miles.

The old break-in period is from the 1950's and 1960's before the advances in machining tolerances, metallurgy, and lubricants. A lot has changed over the past half century.
