rear axle ratios
whats the difference between a 3.73 and 4.10 rear axle ratio? i had a problem with my rear differential that will require a new axle. i have a 1999 gmc sierra 1500 z71 and don't do any towing and im not sure which ratio i should go with.

RE: rear axle ratios
One turns faster than the other per revolution of the driveshaft. But then you probably would know that. One is better for towing the other better for mileage usually.

i guess the 4.10 would work better for me then. i get an average of 11 mpg anyways because of my 4" lift, 33" tires, and my need for speed. i don't thinkmympgwould change that dramatically. thanks.

3.73 turns per driveshaft for one turn per axle vs. 4.1 to 1 think of it as a small gear on the front sproket of your bike when you were a kid vs a larger one the small one would let you pop wheelies and go up hills a lot better than the larger one but you could not go as fast because you were peddeling you butt off

Your mileage will have a difference actually. While cruising the motor is gonna be wound up more with the 4.10, meaning burning more fuel while doing the same thing. It does make hauling a lot easier. 33" tires aren't really big enough to functionally "need" a deeper gear, but it's up to you.

Hey guys,
If you're changing gears in the rear wouldn't you have to change gears on the front as well in a 4X4? Just curious, as I added 35" tires to my HD2500 and am thinking of changing gears to get it back to about where it was with the smaller tires. Thanks.
