I have a 2006 Silverado Z71 Crewcab truck (approx 55k miles) that has developed a strange problem that my mechanic cannot figure out and neither a drive train specialist without opening the entire transmission case etc.
After a wheel bearing needed to be replaced over the summer, now in winter when I tried to select the AWD (or 4WD) option a friction/rubbing noise starts at the front left wheel; to the point where the truck will pull to the left. The truck does get into 4 wheel drive; they tested this on the snow/ice, but this noise will not go away. The noise is significant enough to not use the AWD or 4WD option; something might really break....
When the selection is changed to 2WD again, the noise and pulling immediately stops.
Any suggestions how to remedy this? I am hesitant to bring it into another dealer because of $$'s.

What was the result of your problem? I have a 2002 Chevy Avalanche with a rubbing noise that appears to be coming from the front left side, but only happens in 2WD. As soon as I put it in 4WD, the noise appears to stop or at least disapate. All brake rotors and pads were replaced recently and did not make any difference.

Sounds like a front axle shaft, or Front Diff. may have been damaged when replacing wheel bearing. You could try jacking all four tires off ground have a buddy get in truck and select 4wd and put into drive and give it some gas while your underneath and start checking for noise outta your F diff
