Default Small block or large block V8 ?

Hello all from a new member.

I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. I just got a 1994, K1500 pickup from my brother. It has a 5.7L V8 engine and 4WD. I'm thinking of rebuilding the engine, so I went to the bookstore to find a book on the subject. I'm not a mechanic but I am an engineer and thought I may be able to get through the process with some good tools and a good book. My trouble begins when it seems that Chevy engines are either small block or large and no one book tells you how to rebuild both or even to identify which I have. So my question is if someone can tell me from the info provided which I might have. Also, any recommendations on a good book on the subject. Thanks very much for any help

The best way to tell between the two is the a small blocks valve covers have four bolts holding them to the head, and a big block has seven. The cylinder heads are obviously bigger on a big block. There isn't really a difference in terms of actually rebuilding them, both small and big blocks are built exactly the same. Just the big blocks are... bigger.
