Temp. Gage.
I have a 97' truck. About 2 months ago I noticed it would go all the way to 260 and the check gage light would come on. It mostly happens when I have the heat on but sometimes when I dont. When it does it I have no heat it blows cold. I have replaced 2 temp. sending units. The one inside the water neck and inside the block. Any idea what this is?

Well my grandfather has a shop and I took my truck up there today and my truck took a whole 1 1/2 gallon of anti freeze and I did the same about a month ago. We checked the heater core to see if it was leaking and it isnt. We cant figure out what it is. Were gonna try to figure out where its leaking from.

I have been having the same issue when driving long distances (approximately 20+ miles). Most of the time during the week, I drive about 20 miles total (2 miles one way, 4 miles total a day).
When I do drive longer and after stopping off at places, my truck will not start, not even the starter will crank but I'll have power to everything. I have noticed that the temp shows over 260. After letting it cool for about 30 minutes with the hood open, I'll be able to start the truck as if nothing happened.
This weekend I'll be putting in a new Jet Low Stat Thermostat to see if this will resolve that issue. I've also noticed something else the 2nd time this happened, while on the highway, the truck seemed to stutter-hesitate while accelerating. Could this be related to the over heating issue or a clogged fuel filter?

you may be losing so much coolant that the truck is getting hot. Only reason you have not overheated truck so far is because you travel such short distances.
I believe the coolant is going through engine as was stated on other replys.
Get a shop to test for engine coolant leaks. They can do that with dye and pressure on coolant system, I think.
I know some one on forum can tell you how this is done. If you do not fix the problem you will ruin the engine.
Fastest way to ruin a engine is lack of oil pressure, second fastest way to ruin a engine is lack of coolant, engine will over heat and seize.
Good luck and let us know what you find wrong with engine.
