I have a 1999 Silverado 4wd with 200,000 miles. While driving it this morning it made a weird noise like a klunk or something. I was driving about 60mph and had been driving all morning. After the noise it made I could give it a little gas and it would rev up and then "catch" gear. When I got to my destination it would not go in reverse. Any ideas what it could be? It's all good in drive just no reverse. I tried searching for this but no luck.

Yes Sir,

The reverse input shell has stripped. The transmission has to come out for repair. About a $100 repair if you find the right guy to do it.

I read that 2nd and 4th gears will be out along with no reverse. So I tried it out today and sure enough no 2nd and 4th

That shell carries the torque of the over driven gears (2nd & 4th) along with reverse.


That shell will cost in the neighborhood of $40 and these shops are gonna try to soak you BIG bucks to replace it; $1700 to 2 grand.


The last one I did back in February, I charged the guy $200 and pocketed $100 of it for my 2 hours labor.

I have found a 4l60e from a 1998 and 1999 s-10. Will either one work in my Silverado?

Probably if you don't crowd it. The S-10 versions are built lighter, especially reverse. Make sure it is for a 4x4 also; S=2x and T=4x4.

Actually the S-10 Trannies uses exactly the same clutches As the 1500 Not Weaker or stronger

If its not a 4x4 just change the back housing from your tranny
