Default 2015 Sonic 1.8l Automatic - Timing Belt

What kind of service history does the latter model Sonics have , as far as timing belts . Better than the Aveo , I hope .

We bought this Sonic about a month ago . So , we have some time to ponder the matter . I believe the owner's manual indicates it should be changed around 100,000 miles .

Thanks ,
Wyr

1.8L Engine Only: Replace timing belt, idler pulley, and timing belt tensioner.
97,500 miles (6) OR every three years, whichever comes first

to the op
the aveo crap bomb timing belt issues were resolved in 2009 with better quality parts.
Your sonic has a completely different engine than an aveo. I have not seen any timing belt issues with the sonic engine.

Have not found much info on the Sonic 1.8l timing belt . Any one with photos , videos , pdf's , etc , please let me know . Sounds like I may be tackling it in 3 years .

Very happy to hear the Sonic engine timing belt is not as troublesome as the Aveo engine . :-)

Thanks ,
Wyr

early aveo's were just leftover jumk from Daewoo when gm bought them out for fleet mileage tax breaks. Chevy redesigned and put in a vastly improved line of engines when they became the sonic.

Sorry to be the noob. Can someone find the time and nerves to briefly explain me the function of a timing belt.

I know what it looks like but I'm not really sure why is it so important.

the intake and exhaust valves must open and close in sync with piston movement. the camshaft moves the valves, the crankshaft moves the pistons. the timing belt connects the crankshaft and camshaft and both move in unison. when the belt breaks or jumps, the timing is out and the piston and valves contact each other (on interference engines) and damage occurs.

google the 4 stroke combustion cycle for more info.

In the US, 2009 production year Aveos (All I have seen) have a similar designed 1.6L engine as the 1.8L ones. They have an external forward mounted water pump on the passenger side and a longer lasting timing belt. All the write-ups seemed to indicated that the timing belt was good for around 100K miles but we all want to be safe.

I have one of these, when it turned 94K miles it was time to replace the thermostat and housing, water pump (to be on the safe side), timing belt , tensioner and idler pulley.

The timing belt had no cracks at all and looked perfect.
The water pump looked fine but turned real easy.
The main radiator hoses had expanded.

After everything was back together, an annoying high pitched noise had been cured. Must have been one of the rotating parts was wearing out.

Last I heard, the 1.4 Liter engines have a timing chain.
