I am having problems with my liftgate also so have been doing my research. unfortunatly my problem is different then yours. however through my research I have found A TSB that may relate to your problem.. Here it is
Vehicle: 2,007 Cadillac Escalade
POWER LIFTGATE MAY OPEN OR CLOSE ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY THEN REVERSES, DTCS B135E AND/OR B135F SET (INSPECT LIFTGATE WIRING HARNESS AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY). ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10022713 )
I'll add also, get quality lift assist struts not the cheapest ones...
Remember to support the hatch with a 2x4 or someone helping you, that hatch is heavy, don't rely on the lift assist to hold it open when you change the struts...
