96 Tahoe won't start

I have a question about a 96 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.7l vortec motor. Yesterday I was driving and the truck just stopped completely and wouldn't restart. I checked to see if I was get getting fuel and I had no issues there. I then went on to check to see if I was getting spark and removed the number 3 wire. With the number 3 wire removed the truck started, no problem but once I reconnected the wire the truck shut off again. Basically the truck does not run if the number 3 wire is connected, I replaced all the wires but I am still having the same issue. Do you think you have an idea of what is causing this?

If you connect #3 plug and disconnect another wire will it run? Is it only when #3 is connected? Check the distributor cap and rotor. There might be a short in the distributor.

I tried your suggestion and I plugged the number three wire to another spark plug and nothing, I plugged another wire into the number 3 spark plug and the engine started. Basically there is an issue with that number 3, even though its a new wire.

I changed the distributor cap about a year ago but is it a possibility that it needs to be changed again.

When this issue occurred I changed all the wires coming from the distributor cap including the one going to the coil. The wire going to the coil was burnt out on the end going into the coil but the inside of the coil looks brand new. Maybe this info may be helpful in figuring this issue out.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to update and thank you all for your help. I guess the distributor cap was bad. I changed the cap and rotor and now everything is back to normal. I didn't expect that to be the problem since I changed it just a year ago.

I do have another problem that was occurring before this issue but I'll start a new thread about it.
