Default 97 tahoe rearend trouble

i believe i am having trouble with the rear in my 97. i put it in reverse and it produced a loud clank sound. once i drove forward i began to get an intermitent grinding sound. almost like when 4 wheel drive doesnt engage properly. after unhooking driveshaft i find the yolk to have roughly 1/4 inch of play but not pinion to ring gear. it is in the clusters. i know i will end up rebuilding it but any info is helpful. dont know the gear ratio but truck is sitting on 36 inch tires. thanks for any help
