Default Improving mpg--Suburban

Planning a 4500 mile road trip. Does anybody have a tried and true gas saving method? My 04 Suburban has approx 97,000 miles on it. I've read synthetic oil might gain a few mpgs. At the very least I'll install new tires and change the oil before we go. Thank you

Keep your foot out of it, use cruise control if you have it, dont tailgate, keep the A/C off and slightly over inflate your tires.

60 mph or below. While synthetic will help, I doubt more than 1 mpg.

True but most places that sell non-ethanol gas do so only on 91 octane so you have to weigh the price difference against the better mpg.

Here's a handy website to find the "good" gas.

The synthetic oil MPG improvement is long term investment not a long trip investment (think life time of vehicle)
regular 87 octane gas unless you are going to altitudes then mid-grade but this will not help MPG...

Use your DIC to monitor your ~real time MPG... keep off the brakes, cost when you can and avoid accelerate/brake cycles...

I'm wondering if one of those bug guards on the front would help with airflow?

Nope. All they do is protect the leading edge of the hood. 3M body film will do the same thing and look a lot better IMHO.

I'd imaging the deflector has more of a negative impact on MPG since it is designed to push the air flowing over the hood and windshield slightly higher to get the bugs up and over...
I have the bug shield and its done a good job of keeping rocks off the hood and bugs of the windshield (all but the larger bugs)
