I have a 1997 1500 5.7 gas with 155k & my daughter has a 2005 with 80k same setup. We are experiencing the same symptom. They both crank longer than usual before starting. Should we be changing out our fuel filters on a yearly basis? I just replaced my entire fuel pump, strainer & filter last summer. She has never replaced any of these items. We have both cleaned out the throttle bodies but that did nothing to alleviate the problem. I was considering pulling a spark plug to inspect it.

Check the fuel pressure.

I remember last summer you told me to check the fuel pressure and I cannot remember what specs you recommended. Between what pressures should they be? Also can a novice like me install the fuel filter on a 97 & 2005 Suburban easily? Where can I find the instructions? I watched the man change mine below the driver's door with ease.

If you are mechanically inclined yes you can do it....
you will need to drain the fuel as much as possible, you will need to disconnect the fuel fill tube from the tank to get to the fuel in the tank as many have a siphon restrictor.
also as you drop the tank have something to place under it to lower it a little bit at a time so you don't stress the fuel lines or wires....

Okay and now that I understand that reading is fundamental and you said fuel filter and not pump Yes you can still do that, just undo the connections slowly to allow the fuel pressure to release, you will get a fair amount of fuel spillage.... I need more coffee
