Default Repair or Rebuild?!?

I just bought a 2004 suburban with 240k (5.3) for a few hundred bucks. It has the following codes

p0420
p0151
p0131
p1516
p0300

There is also a few weird noises coming from the engine, theres some lifter ticks and some other noises, there is also white smoke coming from the exhaust which my stepdad says is oil getting past the piston rings, when the exhaust doesn't smell like oil it smells sort of sweet

would it be better to drop a new motor in it or could this one be rebuilt using one of these 500$ rebuild kits I see on summit racing? im also on like a 1500$ budget, im not looking for a performance build, i cant afford to even think about a performance build, i just want whatever will get me from a to b reliably

not sure about the noise.

The signs you have described sound like a blown head gasket.

an engine that burns oil produces blue smoke, overfueling is black smoke and coolant is white/grey smoke.

how many miles on the motor? How much can you get a used one for? Hard to access the condition of the current motor at this point. Usually, I would perform a compression check, but you know it will fail with a bad headgasket. The noises are the x factor.

The motor has 240k on it, I'm taking it to a reputable shop tomorrow morning and they're going to do a diagnostic test, I'm hoping they tell me more than an obd ii scanner will, but I'm okay with a head gasket, I can handle that

Bet there's alot more going on than the head gasket with all that noise. Simple answer is what's most cost effective. A new motor vs a full rebuild.

Right, is it even worth putting a cheap junkyard motor in it? I could possibly be getting a motor with the exact same problems but I guess a rear wrecked vehicle would work

a reputable wrecking yard won't sell junk and they warranty the engines they sell.

good idea to get a professional to access the current motor. it will be well worth a hour diagnostic.
