Default shifter spring

I have an 04 suburban with a shifter issue. the shifter goes in and out of gear just fine. When you pull the arm towards you to shift gears, it doesn't return forward back on it's own. When I took the cover off it looks like there is a spring there that should push the arm forward.
Could this be my problem, is it common or is there something else? I can't tell if the spring is broken or just wore down? I'm thinking the spring is the problem, anyone else? My next question is if I can just buy the spring without buying the whole assembly? If I can buy just the spring, how difficult will it be to put a new one back in?
Thanks
