Default 4 wheel drive

I have a 2004 Suburban. The other day I noticed as I started it that the transfer case buttons, where I am normally lit in 2wheel drive, the neutral was lit red. I pushed the 2 wheel button but it flashed and went back to the neutral red light. So I figured I WASNT in 4 wheel drive and wouldn't damage anything so I drove about 6 miles. Turned the truck off. When I restarted it, the 2 wheel was lit and its been fine since. So what just happened?

My '01 transfer case is occasionally wonky like that. Has 195k miles, and no mechanical issues. I don't lose any sleep over it and write it off as a gremlin. Maybe sensitive to voltage fluctuations?
