Poor gas mileage/smell gas fumes
We have a 2004 Trailblazer, 2WD that used to get 18 miles per gallon in the city.Went to Dealer under extended warranty because the service engine soon light came on 1/8/08. Test #PO454 found leak from gas cap. They installed a new cap. OK! This is the 4th gas cap for this vehicle. This diagnosis and repair cost $64.76. Went back to Dealer on 1/16/08 about strong smell of gas fumes from the side and rear of vehicle. Pressured system and found no leaks. March 11, 2008 still smell gas fumes and vehicle is now getting 13 miles per gallon in the city.
Would appreciate any response to this problem.
Thanks.

RE: Poor gas mileage/smell gas fumes
there is an issue with TB that live in the freezing parts of the country.
Where roads are salted-
Turns out that salt gets up there on top of the tank, and rust the part where the fule pump assembly is at.
If you live in this type of zone its a good possibility this is whats going on.
Other owners report the same- smell of gas-
some may see a a small area where its dripped... but most report just the smell.
the gas leaking or evaporating- may be the cause of your lower mileage...
im a little surprissed at the pressure test though- since it came back OK.
Another thing- and this happened to my brother- in a Saturn he had.
He suddenly began to use more gas- and hed get a gas smell inside the car----
turns out a shop installed a stereo and amplifier...
they used a long screw- the screwed right into the tank.
when full- it would leak thru that hole.

RE: Poor gas mileage/smell gas fumes
Yes,we live in the RUST BOWL CAPTIAL OF THE USA, Northern Ohio. It's very sad that a 4 year old vehicle, with 43,000 miles, would have this problem. At 38,000 miles needed new rotors, etc. because the calipers were frozen-up. Back to the dealer again!
Thanks.
Thanks.

April 1, 2008, Dealer finally found the problem. Gas sender unit rusted through. Very sad that a TB with 44,416 mi. would have this problem.

RE: Poor gas mileage/smell gas fumes
sorry to hear of your troubles. but I guess I hit it right on with the possible problem.
I guess the rust belt will take a toll on your vehicle.
I live in California. Obvioulsy no salted roads here.
I am now at 123,350 miles and Im still on the factory rotors- never been turned andfactory rear pads, the front pads were changed 1 time.
Also on the factory fuel pump... its still going- knock on wood.
that salt will kill vehicles
