This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2007-2013).

The radio in your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is equipped with an anti-theft system that works by ensuring the audio system functions only when it is installed in the original factory model, which is confirmed using an authentic vehicle identification number (VIN). If the radio is removed from your vehicle, it will not power on; however, some lights might appear. If you've removed your radio to complete a repair or interior modification and now need to unlock it, the good news is you can do so without necessarily needing to visit a local garage or Chevrolet dealership. However, you must have the ability to press and hold multiple buttons on your car stereo simultaneously without letting go until the process is complete; if you cannot do this, it's recommended that you seek the help of an assistant. You won't need any special skills or materials to complete this DIY project.

Materials Needed

  • None

Step 1 – Press the correct sequence of buttons

  • Press and hold the 5th preset button as you simultaneously press and hold the seek (forward) and power buttons on your radio.
  • You must press and hold all three buttons simultaneously for this step to work.
  • Try again if the radio does not immediately power on.
  • You will know the radio has powered on when the current time and radio station ID displays on the front of the radio.
  • Check that sound emanates from the system.

Pro Tip

The tape player and CD player will also function properly; however, your stereo may lock again in the future. In some cases, you will need to have your local dealer reprogram your stereo.

Step 2 – Perform an alternative DIY solution

  • Turn on the ignition; it must be completely on and your vehicle running.
  • Press the power button on your radio for several seconds to unlock the system.
  • If this doesn't work, pull your vehicle's codes by pressing and holding presets 2 and 3 for 10 seconds.
  • Write down the 3-digit code that displays on the screen.
  • Immediately press the AM/FM button.
  • Write down the 3-digit code that displays on the screen; this will bring your total to 6 digits.
  • Call 1-800-537-5140 and follow the prompts as directed.
  • Enter your 6-digit code when prompted.

Step 3 – Have your dealer program your radio

Make an appointment to have your local Chevrolet dealer program your radio using the Pass-Through programming system. The dealer will reprogram your stereo based on the year, make and model of your truck.

  • Your dealer will need to retrieve your regular production option (RPO) codes, as well as confirm whether your truck is equipped with a rear camera or speaker package.
  • This is a permanent repair, meaning your radio should not lock again in the future; unless it is removed from the vehicle or tampered with by someone.
  • Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) have been issued by GM for faulty radios that lock intermittently.
  • Ask your dealer if your radio is faulty.

Pro Tip

Just because a TSB is issued doesn't mean GM will incur the cost of the repair. However, if your vehicle is currently under warranty, you will not be subject to any repair costs.
