Chevy Avalanche Battery Light / Battery not charging message

I have a 2003 Chevy Avalanche. The battery light is coming on intermittantly along with the message Battery not charging. I have attempted swapping batteries and checked all connections with no luck. The alternator appears to be working (runs vehicle after starting) any ideas???

Replace the alternator or have a shop test it with the proper equipment.
