Master cylinder or booster

I have a 92 Chevy Beretta and am having brake problems. At first I thought it was the brake line but after looking things over, I now feel it is either the master cylinder or booster. Is there a way to tell which of these could be the problem and how involved it is to fix.

Thanks

what kind of pedall do you have? does it go to the floor when the engine is idling? how about when the engine is off? do you have a firmer pedal then?

will the pedal hold at the same spot, when you are stopping at a light? or does it slowly want to move towards the floor?
