1988 caprice classic brougham ls - ramdomly stalls out then won't start back up.

I have a 1988 caprice classic brougham ls with ~ 75,000 miles. 305 with Carburetor. It is driven daily at least 15+ miles.

While driving more than 20 minutes when It comes to a stop or braking the car will stall out and engine will stop. (Randomly, so not every time)

When I try to restart it, it won't start back up. If I wait about 20 minutes it will then start back up and drive.

This is random so not every time does this happen. But is very embarrassing as I might be at a stop light or intersection.

On occasion I can be at a stop light or stop sign and have it stall there too.

I am looking for some trouble shooting ideas.

Thanks,

Rog

You sure its a carburetor? 1988 was about the time that GM started using the TBI system, which looks a lot like a carburetor, but it has two injection nozzles inside,
not multiple intake port fuel injection. Could be the injectors or the wiring are getting old. If its not that, I'd figure on it being an ignition issue. The TBI injectors are easy to get out and inspect and replace , Just dont drop a screw down the intake if you decide to check them out. Might also be your fuel pump going bad as well.

I had an 89 Caprice with a 305 but fuel injected. I had a similar issue that was more frequent when it was damp. Turned out to be a crack in the coil's tower. Spark would jump from coil tower to block, grounding itself . Replacing the coil fixed the problem.
