I've got an 83 caprice classic with a 95 model 350 engine and ac compressor single serpentine belt set up my question is can I adapt the current compressor to work with the factory ac if so. Do I need to change the condensor,drier,etc.. or is there an easier solution

The real question is what freon? I'd suggest replacing the drier if this is other than R12. Compatablility on oil/refregerant is the key. If you are going to "upgrade", I'd suggest evacuate the system, then replace with the latest freon/oil.

So I'm looking at replacing the oem drier with a 90 model drier or just using a retro fit kit from r12 to r134a...sorry still a bit confused

are both systems cycling clutch orfice tube systems? What controls compressor cycling on both systems?

drier...do you mean accumulator or is the system thermal expansion valve type?

You should convert to the R134a freon anyway. It is cheaper and easier to get. Changing the drier is also a good idea. To make the system work like you want, you can have hoses made with the correct fittings to match the compressor you want to use and the other end to match the other connection. I have done this before and it does work.

I've a '73 Caprice Classic. The other day I was trying to turn right at a stop light. The wheel wouldn't turn far enough and I was heading into traffic. I grabbed the steering wheel and cranked it to the right as hard as I could. It suddenly came free and I made the turn. I stopped at the next lot and looked under the hood to see what happened. I found that the wires to my AC Condenser had wrapped around the Steering Column, when I jerked the wheel, it ripped the wires out of everything. I can see where most of the wires need to be reattached, but there is a 3 prong plug that I can't find where it goes. Does anyone no how to wire this back correctly.

Post some pics, perhaps someone can help.
