need advice on 87 caprice engine swap

I think the biggest motor that will fit in that caprice is a short block 400 which are rare if you get into the big blocks you need to do a lot of things like new springs and better brakes the whole nine.

Chevy88caprice is right....ANY Chevy small block will feel right at home. The BIG question is how much torque the new motor will have vs. the original.....because you have to take in consideration the rest of the drivetrain, ie: trans, rear end....etc.
I mean, you can run a ZZ-4 350 like I run in my Z-28......Merlin makes a 427 small block that puts out over 500HP!! Everything has to balanced....run together and compliment each other...it can be quite a challenge!

87 Caprice will swallow anything. I had a ZZ4 in 87 Caprice Wagon until I swapped it over to my 88 Wagon.
The 200-4r trannys are pretty stout but I would recomend a Rebuild and the rear end would be happier with 3.42's or 4.11's than with the stock 2.73. I was getting 17.5mpg on the highway at 85mph with the 3.42's. Now I get about 14mpg with the 4.10's but the thing SCREWS.
When I was putting in the ZZ4 me and my buddy were looking and figure a big block should fit right in there. you might need custom headers.
If you have a sedan I would upgrade to the Wagons 12" rotors, that will give you Plenty of stopping power. I have had over 900lbs+ in my 87 wagon and never felt it needed more stopping power, Maybe some helper springs but the brakes were more than ample.
Oh ya I don't recommend spinning the stock driveshaft over 5800rpm. In my experience the blow apart into 3 pieces, taking your floor and your 2 day old custom exhaust with it.
Also I used a radiator from a 82 or 83 caprice wagon Diesel. Drops right in and keeps that baby cool with no problem. Plus it has a tranny and oil cooler in it.
Any way there has to enough holes in that engine cradle for about 10-12 motor set ups. So anything should just slide in there.
