2004 Cavalier won't start

The car just stopped starting. It tries to fire up, but won't turn over. Took it to mechanic he said he put in a used fuel pump but it didn't fix the problem. He refused to do anymore work on it so we had it towed somewhere else. Today we noticed that the air intake (black box in front of the injectors) had a loose hose on the back, then it broke off. So we replaced the black box. During this process we noticed that there is a lot of fuel in the air intake. There are 2 hoses, one that runs to the fuel injector and one that goes to the air intake. Fuel is coming out of both hoses. We are now wondering if the loose hose on the black box was the cause of our original not starting problem, and if the mechanic reversed the hoses coming out of fuel pump to cause the fuel in both hoses, both going into the injectors and into the air intake. But those are just our theories we really have no idea why there is fuel in the air intake. Please advise! :)
