sounds like the upper strut bearings are worn out. When they are worn, the coil springs are forced to wind up as the steering turns...and they make a twang or boing noise.
you can verify this by putting you hand on the spring while some one turns the steering wheel....you will feel the binding transferred into the spring. My 2005 were dust...no bearing or race remained. It was so bad I was getting memory steer. if I turned hard left, the car would have a pull left after I straighted the wheel.
quick struts may be the best way for you to go if you do your own work and you don't have access to a quality spring compressor. replace them in pairs.
