Default trunk lid not closing

Hey wise people,

I've a question for you -- once upon a time, the trunk was opened using the button in the cockpit. Ever since then, it doesn't close. I've been driving around with the trunk bungee'd shut for a year now after exhausting mine and my friends' efforts in figuring out what the heck is going on.

Here's the facts:
[ul][*]The latch will work when triggered with an object such as a screwdriver[*]The key will open a locked latch[*]The latch does not come into contact with the catch on the body of the car[*]There appears to be no structural damage to the body of the car (i.e. the latch hasn't up and shifted 1/4" down, or anything like that)[/ul]Thoughts? Any insight you could give would be greatly appreciated. Our financial resources aren't the greatest, so any DIY repairs or tweaks are highly valued. :-)

Thanks
-MSC-

See, that's the rub... when I climb into the trunk to bungee the lid shut, it appears that the latch is making *no contact whatsoever* with the catch on the body of the car. The latch works when triggered by an object such as a screwdriver, but in attempting to close the trunk, it doesn't come anywhere close. I haven't been in an accident or anything else that would cause rear-end damage, so this is a puzzling mystery indeed...

No... I've pushed it a couple of times to see if it will "reset" something, and I still hear the "click" of the trunk unlatching.
