Angry 77 Chevy 350 too big of cam? HELP

So a while back I had my buddy rebuild the engine in my 77 chevy short box 4x4 with a 4 speed tranny

When we tore it apart we realized it was bored 65 over and needed a new cam
The only one we had was a big RV cam with over 500 lift
Only mods were edelbrock intake and carb and headers and bored. 65 over

Truck didn't run near as hard as it did with stock cam but sounded nasty and turned some crazy rpm
(Little scary with stock bottom end and stock heads)
Ran good in that 4 speed truck tho

Recently I sold the motor to a friend with an 86 4x4 with a huge lift and 44 in tires
Running a stock turbo 400 trans
when we put the motor in the damn truck will hardly move at all!!

Thinking that the cam won't make power until about 3000 rpm and with that auto tranny it won't even rev up to that till or 3 miles down the road lol

Should we put on some ported vortec 350 heads and a 3000 stall converter? Or try to find a factory cam
