Default Bearing clearance

What is the desired bearing clearance for a MkIV BBC? One book says .002-.003. General mechanical knowledge says .001 per 1" of diameter, which is .0027, but +- how much? I'm on my 3rd set of bearings and most are more than .003". Street driven muscle car.

If you have a 3 inch journal, with your post it would be .003" I'd say .002-.003" clearance with a 1 1/2 inch journal. You might be thinking of a small engine.
