Default Fix for Oil Consumption in 2010 Equinox?

Does anyone know what is fixed in the 2010 equinoxes to reduce the oil consumption? Can they just do new pistons and rings? It seems like there would be damage to the cylinder walls if there is oil passing through. GM dealer is saying it will be $3000 to fix, should I do that or sell this hunk of crap.
