Default Main cap issue on 305 rebuild

As a project and learning experience, I am rebuilding a 1978 305. Bought it disassembled from a guy on craiglist... he tore it apart, had it cleaned/machined but never put it back together... that's where I come in.

Doing a test fit of the main caps and noticed the fit doesn't look right... notice the ledge where the cap meets the block. I have not installed the bearings yet because it looks like the set I have may be wrong... the cap bearing notch doesn't match up to the notch on the cap itself. The caps have a centered notch, the cap bearings have an offset notch.

The caps are marked with the position they were pulled from... caps are GM 7178.

The ledge has me concerned about whether this is the correct caps for this block or not. Once the proper bearings are installed will this fix the prob or do I have a cap issue here? Looking for guidance... thx!

Wrong caps but I assume they can be machined to work, might be cheaper to find the right set but they will at the least need atleast line honed, really unless you have all the parts already or are in a remote location like everyone says...350ci.. more then likley find a rebuildable runner for maybe hundred bucks more then its guna cost to solve ur main cap dillemma..

if you cant get the original cap's it might just be cheaper to get another block .to machine that block and cap's would be cost prohibitive ,if you could get someone to line bore the block and remove that much material .
