Default Timing changes

Please help. I recently took my 400 sbc and put in a top end kit everything went smooth with the build. Then set the timing at +10. And it runs great. Then I go to tune the carb and it starts to chug. Check the timing -10. If i set it back it just changes. Distributor was tightened down during tests.

Any insights would be helpful.

What year and model is your GM motor? Pickup? Car?

Must be pre-1987 if it has a carb, I am guessing. Does it have HEI ignition and which carburetor is it equipped with?
