ac help
Newbie here. Ok so i live in florida where its hotter than the sun. I have a 02 express with the 5.0 conversion van. When its sitting still my ac has a hard time cooling. My engine temp sits about 200 to 210. Once its rolling it drops back down to bout 180ish and starts blowing ice cold again. Ac guy told me i need a new compressor. What do you guys think?

look on you tube " Eric the car guy condenser cleaning " might be a option to try before the new compressor route!

a/c help
just went thru this issue last week bought my van from a gentleman in Missouri he spent nearly a $1000 having the a/c rebuilt and it still did not cool at idle i bought it because he was at the end of his patience and he bought a 2005 i replaced the fan clutch and it will set in 95 degree traffic and hold 60 degrees, cools to 48 going down road,i have run into this many times over the years
it is hard for people to grasp that even though the engine isn't getting hot there just isn't enough air flow to let the a/c function properly ,have had to do the old I'll pay for the part if I'm wrong thing to get several fixed over the years. |
I'm with blondie. Check your condensor for obstruction. The fact that your engine temp rises while sitting is a hint. Also make sure your fan clutch is working. Mine does not engage till the temp gauge gets to half way.....
When did you have your ac 134a filled? |
It was vaccum and filled not even 3 months ago. Had no leaks.
|
The fan spins. I'm watching it as I type this. Condenser is free of obstructions. I will try the fan clutch route first. It's a 50 dollar part so that's not to bad.

up here is 200 bucks for a fan clutch. Not cheap.....

I agree with what has been already suggested. if everything checks out ok, you might try a new low pressure switch.
gm has a tsb for intermittent a/c operation...if all else checks out, a new updated switch is recommended. I found this out after ruling everything else out; went in to buy a new switch and had the parts guy informed me a tsb is attached to this part. |
