I just changed the oil.
Based on the dip stick I had 5 - 5 1/2 quarts (impossible to get a clean read).
I drained out 4 1/2 qts. That would be off 1/2 to 1 qts.

I know there is an oil film that hangs in the engine.
I can think 1/2 qt is possible but a quart seems high?

Am I missing something in checking the dip stick (yes I wipe it clean) or should I be looking for some other problem?

This van was purchased used.
Might there be some crud hanging in the oil system?
Would an oil "cleaner" be in order or do I just wait 3300 miles and do it again to see what results?

Note the van oil pressure gauge runs at about 40.

If it has been run, wipe the dipstick, then reinsert, and withdraw it, then look at the level.

Have the same issue on my 5.7L - wipe it clean & still get the same thing... oil on the stick 'smeared' up past the 'Full' mark.

i think it's capillary action of oil on the dipstick in that long-azz dipstick tube - never really drains out until a few hours has passed after running.

Guess it could be the wrong dipstick in there. Next oil change, add the correct amount of oil, run it & then recheck it the next morning. Mark the dipstick tube w/ a punch if you KNOW the oil level is right but the stick shows a definite level that's off.

Either way - I have the same issue and no amount of 'wiping the dipstick clean' changes it unless the engine has not been run for several hours.
