removing black door panels on side/rear cargo doors
i would like to insulate the inside of the doors on my 2017 cargo , i have the black plastic panels stock from gm
it looks like these are pop riveted on and have to be drilled out? is this right? is everyone pop riveting them back on or is there a better way? thanks for any insight |
I don't know, as I have the passenger version, but having replaced a couple power window motors in my old Astro, I know GM likes pop rivets. I also don't know of an easier or better way to fasten them back, either. But that's easy for me to say, having inherited a nice pop rivet kit my Father-In-Law put together.

lol, will stop by chevy tomorrow and see about getting some replacements for when i pull these
think i have a rivet gun somewhere... |

ok so take a look at this pic and tell me if your door panels
look like this..... I know you dont see much . but you get the idea... if they look like this.. then NO you dont have to use Pop Rivet Gun... they actually With force snap off the door. |
Now.... Ask me how I know this... lol
I actually did drill out one of those darn Pop Rivets just to find out that it pops off the door its self.... lol OH.. does any one need door panel >???? lol |
holy cow is that a pop rivet gun? like air gun or something
mine does not look like that lol teamuir that is awesome, would be so happy if they pull off 90% sure mine look like that but am going to post a picture in a minute |

if you want easier access in the future, for replacing speakers for example, then you might be able to use threaded inserts + screws. You can usually find inexpensive tools to do it at a Harbour Freight or similar store. Plastic rivets could be an inexpensive option too.
|
well i cannot get the photos to load...
will do more research, not sure why it is not working |

trying the pictures a different way
|
those look like pop rivets to me. I would go ahead and drill them out.
|
if they have to be drilled out i will research some kind of screw insert like you suggested, would be nice to be able to access them easier...

you'll need to know the hole size to choose the correct insert+fastener. You might try drilling out one rivet first. |
GEEZE Did Any one not read what I posted...
YES they are pop rivets... and YES I drilled 1 of mine out ONLY to find... that it is attached to a door panel clip.... that POPS into the hole in the door..... |
If it wasnt so late I would go out and find the said clip then open my door
and show you all that on my van.... the door panel attaches to the door its self with clips those clips are POP RIVETED to the door panel you exert some pressure on the panel and the door panel will pop off NOW provided that you take that handle assembly off too... |
apologies ... I got distracted with all the rivet gun talk.
It makes sense. My passenger van looks a bit different, but yes, a lot of the trim is held by various types of clips, and will come off with a quick, firm tug. Unfortunately, they only survive removal once or twice before they break. |
i did read your post and was hoping you were right!! awesome
will pop these off in the next couple of days and insulate the doors too hopefully they wont need to come off again and will go back together right thank you! |

insulating the doors is not hard... it makes a huge difference
in sound and keeping it cool or warm.... |
Is that shag on the walls? I get why you call it Elmo now.

definitely the easiest thing to do on my van so far has been the thinsulate and ez cool stuff
will do the doors but mine on the top are a solid smooth panel, not sure what i will do about the top part if anything that is a question for my shop guy when he has time to look at it but will definitely pull the panels and insulate the bottom part end of the week |
My Van is MY TOY HAULER... I dont use it every day like alot of people do
I bought my van aug of last year I believe I have only put 134 miles on it since I decided when I bought it I was going to do a theme back to the 70's style I am achieving that.... when I show my van to people I always get a smile.... thats what I was achieving by me doing this to my van.... its not for everyone but its what I wanted to do .... I insulated the entire ceiling with the 1 inch hard stuff.... but under the head liner there isnt enough room for that I went with the silver stuff you see in my pics.... I am not finished by any means with the interior... we have been having some stupid weather here... lawn mowing company shows up at work... today... cutting grass while its snowing out... any ways... good luck with your insulating.. and if you have any questions ask away.. we have many here willing to help ya. |
Express Savanna Door Panels

As I am doing some spring cleaning.. I found those door panels
that were talked about in this thread so I took a few pictures you can see how the clips looks |
that is funny, just got my panels off yesterday and took some pics also
i have some close ups of the clips and will post them when i get a chance |
I take it you didnt have any problems then >?
|
No real problems but they were a pain in the ass to get off The clips were tight and I scratched the van a little bit next to the clips trying to get them out, I would slide pair of long needle nose pliers in there and pinch them together will be happy if I don’t have to take them off ever again |
I understand that .. I didnt much care when I took mine off I knew they
were not going back on .....lol with a little force mine popped off.... I honestly like passenger van door panels much better... |
Anybody got a extra set of door panels???
|
I recently bought an '07 Chevy Express cargo van....but it doesn't have the inner door panels on the side or rear doors. Where can I buy them? I've tried ebay already....it's like talking to fence post.....there's gotta be a better way.....and a better place. Anyone know where you can buy the 4 panels I need?
|
I agree....I prefer passenger door panels too...but I'm cheap....I just want the door covered as cheap as possible.
