Question 2006 Chevrolet Express Explorer Conversion van

I've got a 2006 Chevrolet Express Explorer Conversion van. It currently has 16X6.5 wheels running P235/75R16 tires. I would like to increase the wheel size just a little bit and run 17X8 wheels. It looks like the Express 1500 ran these 17X7.5's from the factory as an option, so I don't think it will be an issue?

But I'm trying to figure out tire size and the wheel-size.com calculator is giving me a headache lol. It says I should be able to run 255/65R17 and it just be .8% bigger than stock. I found a truck website that said they could run 255/70R17 (4% bigger according to wheel-size.com) But they probably have larger wheel wells. Anybody else run slightly bigger wheels on one of these, or just have any insight in general on this? Or anyone know what amount of clearance they have?

Thanks in advance!!

I would recommend you try and keep the overall rim + tire diameter the same as the OEM size. If you deviate more than 10% you will get ABS related CEL warnings and it will also mess with the transmission gear shifts and result in speedometer and odometer reading errors. And this doesn’t touch on reduced clearance (and more than likely hard interference) between the tire and the chassis/frame.

Now, those (electrical issues) issues can be fixed, via reprogramming of the engine ECM and the ABS computer, but it will need to be done by a non-GM shop/car electrical specialist, and will set you back at least $250. Been there, seen it and done it.

Would think the ABS is fine as long as all wheels are the same size.

Someone further down the board tried to put larger wheels on his and found they would not clear. I was surprised as even the 1-ton has the same wheel opening.

My mistake, you are correct. The ABS controller get the vehicle speed input from the ABS speed sensors on the front wheels, and compares that speed to the speed reading it gets from the vehicle ECM, which comes from the VSS in the transmission (ie rear wheel speed). If it detects a difference of more than 10%, it throws an ABS CEL error.
Knowing this, if you put oversized wheel/tires on your car, and you decide to fix it electronically, it is crucial that you reprogram both the ECM and the EBCM. If you only fix one, you will get the ABS error.

I'm running 255/55-17's in the form of Destination LE2's. Absolutely no clearance issues. I am enjoying the taller tire and better ride. I have run this combination for about 7 years. No problems with ABS, braking, etc.
