Wander
#41
Some tires wander by following grooves in the road surface. Some tires do it worse than others.

Brief update. Been trying to cure the wander for some time. Discovered too many alignment tech's don't know much about the old vans. Last chain tire shop gave up trying to adjust after swearing at my van for an hour. He and the manager sent me to an alignment specialist. Alignment shop in an industrial park that charges $150 for an alignment and is booked 2 weeks out. Put my van on the rack and in 2 minutes figured out the problem. When I removed the inserts/plugs for the caster camber kit I missed part of it so the caster camber bolt was restricted on how far it would move. Helped in adjusting but caster camber is maxed out, not real far off but could be better. Tech told me not to tell anyone he said this but can enlarge the hole a bit and get enough adjustment to be in specs.
Been suspecting the tires/wheels for some time so searching the net and mulling this over I looked at my options and started looking for some OE steel wheel's which has turned into a frustrating cluster. The junk yard in Naples FL wants $150 each, not a typo, $150 each for used wheels! Drove an hour for 4 wheels for $25 each, get home and they do not fit! On and on. I picked up 2 steel wheels from a pick and pull for $10 each! 2 is all they had.
Bought 2 used tires from a local tire shop $50 ea mounted and balanced on the steel wheels, put them on the front of the van and night and day!!! Noticeable big difference pulling out of the driveway. Steering feels much firmer/tighter, does not have that loose floaty feeling, still not right on the highway but have the 2 aluminum rims and tires on the rear. Appears that I have a tire issue or a wheel issue. As soon as I can get a couple more rims I will put the tires I have on the steel wheels and see which is the problem.

The results are in, I will not bore you with all the details. The tires I had were dismounted from the Aluminum rims and mounted on 8 lug steel rims from a 2002 Savana 2500. The handling is solid it was definitely the rims.
