1995 chevy caprice with 5.7 lt1

Does anyone know for sure if the distributor on the 95 chevy caprice with the 5.7 eng would cause the car to shut off without warning?

Hi bbish0p,

Welcome to the Chevy forums.

The ICM module has a dielectric grease on the bottom. When this dries out, the ICM goes wonky. This causes the ignition to cut out sporadically. Be sure you get an ICM that has a packet of dielectric grease included.(@20$ at any parts store) Replace the ICM. Grease the bottom metal plate well. Check that the rotor and cap are in good condition, with no cracks or carbon tracking.

Peace be with you. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Best of luck.

thanks for the advice. I've already changed the icm but don't think i used any grease when replacing it. If the opti spark was going bad would it have the same effect as listed above?

Google "opti-spark" there's a world of answers on the internet.(albeit just a series of tubes...)

What's your mileage like, and how's your waterpump? Opti-spark seems prone to waterpump leakage by design. This inherent defect, in combo with high mileage might be the excuse you're looking for to upgrade your drivetrain to a more dependable overall design.

If you did not put grease on the ICM when you installed it then you need to take it back apart and put it on. No grease on it can cause an array of performance issues.
