1998 1500 Wont start
 

Truck was running fine one day the next turns over wont start. So with 100000 miles on the truck I decide to give it a tune up before trouble shooting. Cap wires plugs rotor fuel filter, and eventually the coil and the Igtion cotrol Module the hanes manual that I am using led me to the ICM the coil seemed likly to be the culprit still truck turns over will not run intermittnt pops is all that I can get. There is fuel on the spark plugs, my timing light lights up quite nicely on the new belden plug wires?? Not sure what to do next don't want to take to the shop if I can help it. Thank you for your time.

1. Make sure you have fuel (sometimes you gotta ask)
2. Check you battery charge
3. Get your starter tested
4. Did you recently fuel up? You may have water in the fuel.

Otherwise

Sounds like you are getting incomplete combustion. Your Air/Fuel ratio could be too rich or you could be getting a late spark. This may explain the fuel on the spark plugs.

It is fuel on the plugs the starter seems to be turning the engine over fast enought to start I have my battery charger on because the battery got rundown while troubleshooting. Probably hvae to tow in to have a scantool hooked up. thanks for the reply

Hi guys,

I have the same problem on a 98 c1500 4.3. I plug in the block heater the night before and it starts right up.

It will only do this if the temperature is near the freezing mark + / - a degree or two and moist outside.

This has been going on for five years now. What can you expect with a truck that has 308000 km on it?

I have to watch the weather report the night before and plug in the truck if I want to get to work on time.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it, cycle the key on & off a few times. Fuel pressure should hold steady. If it drops, suspect your injectors or fuel pressure regulator (leaking). Very common issue on these engines. Usually they will start anyways (getting a crazy amount of fuel)but i have seen one that wouldn't.

Need to see around 58psi of fuel at the rails. I think they won't start with less than 50psi.
Can you hear the pump prime for 2 sec's when you turn the key on?

Try replacing the Starter Crank Relay if you have one. It will prevent the starter from working if it is defective.
