5.7L timing chain
I just put a new timing chain and gears on this engine. What is the position of the engine when the marks on the pullys are correctly aligned? Position meaning, in what condition would the engine be? Is this supposed to be cylinder #1 in compression for firing.
|
yes, that's correct
|
That being the supposed position then I am stumped. When the marks are aligned the #1 cylinder is at top but the cam is in the opposite position. For some reason #1 firing position is when the marks are both at the top of their respective pullys. Any suggestions? Mismarked pully. The guide pin on the cam pully is in the right position according to the manual. On the right when the dots are aligned.

double check install instructions of timing set. i've heard, not seen tho, some sets both marks face straight up for correct install.
|
There were no instructions. Just metal. I had read some mention of this but ran across something else that said disregard because it is not true. Now I'm really stumped. Thanks for your reply.

what brand is timing set? or a part number, place of purchase?

Cloyes
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2388&ppt=C0141 I was just perusing Cloyes website to see what I can find out. |
Just found this 'document". Scroll down to page 6. #1 cylinder is with cam at 12 O'clock.
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/10072263...-Marks-Books-2 Also Wiki: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/1989_Chevy..._gear_Cam_gear Seems like this information should be more readily available. The shop manual, not Chiltons which I NEVER trust, at the library says the marks go together. |
Just for the search archive. Response from Cloyes
"Timing is at 6:00 and 12:00 to install set #1 compression is 12:00 and 12:00 Mike Senia" |
tryin to find answer for ya as well. sounds like the marks need to be opposite each other. hope that it works for ya.
