700r4

I got an 86 C20 that i've been trying to get together since November or so when i got it. I bought it without a motor and the spider gears were tore out of the rear end. I got a motor finally and got the rear end together and finally put it in reverse to back out of the garage. Works just fine. backed down the driveway and put it in overdrive. you can feel it go into gear but when you go to hit the gas it just revs like it's slippin real bad. Lock it down in first, it moves just fine. I didnt get a chance to take it down the road because the frontbrakes were locking upso i dont know if i could manualy shift up into second. i know its low on fluid i dont know if that could be the cause or what. I've never heard anything good about a 700 other than the overdrive. If it's junk i found a turbo 350 for $50 that i know is good and i could swap that.iknow you can get someadjustment out of the drive shaft being 2 piece but i read somewhere that i cant reuse the 700 yoke if it's older than a 87. any help on this would be appreciated. I would really like to get this truck on the road and start on restoring it.

I would top it up and then try her, also you can burn the disks up really fast if you try to move it with low fluid.

I think the turbo 350 is astronger trans, however I have not seen meny 700 R's blow up, even on plow trucks. If you can get a turbo 350 for $50 I would get it for a spear just incase it all goes to hell sometime in the future. Oh and im not sure but I think the 700R comes withnon- lock up torque and the turbo 350 has a lockup.

Well my 86 C20 has the 700R4 and it's bullet proof with no problems.

The only thing was the original electrical connections inside on thetorque converter lock solenoid would eventually fail but once repaired would be fine ... according to a tranny tech. I knew.

btw... the 700R4 has a locking torque conv. for overdrive as evidenced by the electrical connector on the driver's side of the tranny.

I have had 2 different vehicles with same problem, changed trans filter and fluid. One now works perfect other worked for awhile and now slips, cost me about $35 to do, may be worth trying before major repairs.
