Comparing Tires Calculator
Here is a great calculator that will tell you the difference between your current tire and a new tire (size). It automatically calculates the difference in Sidewall Height, Section Width, Overall Diameter, Circumference and Revs per mile. It also tells you the difference in speed, for example, if your current tire goes 65 MPH, with the new tire your actual speed is 68.56 MPH. (See sample screen shot below.)

Fellas, this calculator has been available for quite a while, and linked on this Forum numerous times. However...
I'd suggest that you use your OEM size in the first three cells, it'll give you more accurate info, specially since many are not running the exact OEM.
Other than that, just follow the directions.

Ha, the sky's the limit, as long as you are aware of changes different tires make. Most times people do this for cosmetic reasons, and others for functional. In either case, there are trade-offs in the ride, handling, breaking, center of gravity and load carrying ability.
Now, if you're just talking about a slightly larger tire on your existing rims...
The rule of thumb is...
That you don't go with a Tire that's over 1" wider than your Rim Width.
(is that what you meant ?)
