deep pan filter
 

I was wondering why there is a different filter for the 4L60-E with OE deep pan.

The fluid inside both should be sitting at the same height.

The 4l60e weighs about 145 pounds dry, and 165 wet. The Shallow Pan requires 8.4 quarts (9.64" torque converter) or 11.4 quarts (11.81" torque converter)... Deep pan versions however require as much as 14 quarts. The length and volume of the cooling circuit will vary and will require an additional amount. I dont know if this help but is about all i know on that situation.

deep pan is for a 4x4 and shallow is a 2wd... the necks are the same size but the filter thickness is different because the transfer case also uses the trans fluid for lube so therefore it has to be closer to the bottom of the pan to be able to pick up all the trans fluid....

My transfer case is completely separate and uses it's own lube.

As you said the deep pan transmission requires more fluid, so the shallow and deep pans both end up with the fluid sitting at the same height. So shouldn't the same filter be able to work for both?

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

The deeper pan filter reaches deeper into the deep pan to get better filtering

on the transmissions provided with the severe duty equipment, such as the

deep pan. The larger amount of fluid disperses more dirt, and minimally

provides overall better cooling, but the designers at GM intended for the

deeper pan filter to provide better overall inherent self cleaning through

depth/pressure-induced heavy impure particle entrapment, IIRC.

Using the shallow pan filter on the deeper pan is inadvisable, for mere

warranty reasons alone.

Never mind fit/function issues.

I would think that the deep pan filter is larger to support itself in the pan, the filter is only pressed in and it sitting in the bottom of the pan provides support, using the shorter/thiner filter could lead the filter working its way out in a deep pan setting....
