question on transfer case

Hi
I have a 1991 chevy k2500 5.7l v8
I am trying to back it up a hill on my driveway and i get about half way up and the back wheels just spin like they are not getting any traction at all what will cause it to do that. Is that the sign of the transfer going or is it a bad axle or is it the rear. It is a 4x4. Please help.

Thank You
Michael

Well, it ain't the transfer case.

I agree with kevinkpk, I doubt if it's the Case...

You say "both" wheels spin...so you have an Eaton or other Posi/True Diff ?
Do you actually have it in 4WD (Hi or Lo) ?
Can you get up the grade in a forward direction ?

Note...
The Transfer Case doesn't get too involved in the drive unless you're in Lo. Otherwise it sorta just passes the mechanics along/through it.

You really shouldn't try to apply maximum power when in reverse. Differentials aren't built to do that all that well. Forward is the best way.
