turbo 350 rooster linkage control arms

Have an issue with a turbo 350 shiftng. It was a fresh rebuild and ran perfect till it started getting hard to engage into drive then it just quit. dropped the pan and found that the backing nut to the rooster bracket had backed off and the shifting rod and gear position lock had come undone. I re connected everything tightend the nut up, put the pan back on and fluid back in. Started the truck up and it acts like it is low on transmission fluid. Takes about 15 seconds for reverse to engage and longer for it to disengage when put into neutral. Drop it into drive and no go till I drop it down into 2nd. Will dis engage like in neutral when I put back into drive. My question is can you install the shifting rod 180 degrees out or can the S hook connection only be installed on 1 side of the rod
