Default valve or lifter?

I have a 98 s10 4x4 with 120,000 miles on it, i regularly change the oil and all other fluids. This morning when i went to warm up the truck and as soon as it started there was this horrible sounding ticking/knocking noise. It had never done this before. i checked the oil and it was a about a quater of a quart low. As the engine came up to temp. it went away. I asked a local mechanic what it could be and he said it was probably a lifter or valve sticking. he also said the 0 degree weather does not help. Does that sound right? If so is there anything i can do to help fix it, it is very annoying. Any one else have this problem? Thanks
