2002 Impala 3.8 Transmission

Hi,

I currently own 2 impalas. 2002 LS 3.8 with 206,000 miles and a 2003 LS 3.8 with just under 50k. My 02 tranny just died...It had the usual hard shift for about 100k miles.. I just ignored it..The other day it would not shift anymore into gear. It would if I turned the car off and it would shift and run for about 200 ft then it would just rev up...I was able to shut off start and shift until I got almost home then my mechanic/friend towed me. The car is in excellent condition and runs well...So, I want to keep it. I am having trouble finding a used low mileage tranny...BUt I need to know, can I use a tranny from a 2004, or 2003 impala or grand prix? The local junkyard guy, is very kowledgable and he says no. However, for the 2004 impala it has the same tranny and it lists the grand prix as a compatible....Just trying to understand why an 03 or 04 wont work in in 02? Its the same tranny...

Thanks..Hopefully there is someone out there that can answer this one..Any chevy mechanics out there??

Default 2002 Impala 3.8 Transmission

Thanks....That is what i am using car-part.com...Use it all the time...For the 02 it shows no compatibles..For the 04 it shows 04 grand prix. I have found on google that states 02-04 impala are all compatible, but car-part and local junkyard dont show them as compatible. Would like to know if someone has done an 04 or 03 in an 02 impala.
