spark knock sensor?

I am getting spark knock from my 1997 Lumina when I put a strain on the engine. When I use 93 Octane gas in the car the knock stops. ffice:office" />

Should I replace the Knock Sensor and where do I find it? Is it hard to change?

Thanks for any help.

Hey guys,

I found out where the Spark Knock Sensor is near the oil filter.

If it is working properly the engine should not give any spark knock, Correct?

Or do some old cars with 180,000 miles spark knock even with a good sensor?

Thanks

if it goes away with the higher octane fuel then its probably working correctly..
What is the minimum octane rating your vehicle calls for?
may need to look into a timing advance issue, possibly a worn distributor gear since the timing is set by the ECM

I agree - spark knock is usually timing - 97 is obd ii, so you should be able to tap into the ecm and adjust the timing that way with a laptop.

BTW there is no Dist in a Coil Pack car... it's all controlled by the ECM and crank and cam sensors that give it feedback as to where TDC is.... I'd check ignition timing.

True but he didn't list an engine and the mid to late 90's were transition years from distributors to coil pacs... my 1997 engine had a distributor...

I have the 3100

My engine is a 3100 SFI V6
Today I changed the oil and Oil filter. Then I put in a new spark knock sensor. When I drove under a strain I still get the Knock.
What do I need to do next?
Someone told me an oxygen sensor.
Thanks for the help.

I spoke to another mechanic today that is telling me that it could be the EGR System cloged. I cleaned this out in the past. The engine light was on in the past and when I cleaned it out that fixed the engine light. Do you think this EGR lines could be causeing it?
